I have started to notice that tomorrow is every two days. That's not the worst time for waiting in between posts but it should probably be changed. Today's topic is, pause for a drumroll, creating characters! Yay!
Creating a character is one of the weirdest things I have ever had to do. If we took a minor character and a major character you can see what I mean by that. When I created Theo, my main character, I was able to imagine what he looked like and his likes and dislikes. In a way, I was able to envision this ideal male version of myself.
He was tall but not too tall. He had shoulder-length wavy hair that was brown and glowing brown eyes that remind me of tree bark. His physical aspects were easy to create and dream about, but his inner parts, the things that made him Theo were the parts that took the longest to create. You see Theo, and all of my characters had little bits of me in them. Theo had my love for history and belief that everyone should learn from it. Beth, another of my main characters, had my motherly instinct but didn't have the kids to go along with it. Astra had my stubbornness and attitude. Each one took parts of me and became themselves.
Now I know what you're thinking, "So you gave them only your good qualities but where do their bad parts come from?"
Still me. Theo has a hard time trusting others and tends to overthink things. Beth will do what she thinks is best even if it hurts someone else. Astra tends to trust to easily and gets hurt because of it. All of these still come from me. I'm human and have many faults, because of this I have deemed that my characters will also have faults.
So far all I've talked about were major characters, but how do you write minor characters? It's simple. What do you want the reader to know about the main character? Is your character kind? Insert a situation that shows the answer. Are they rude? Put them in an interaction that shows how they react to someone doing something that they think is rude. Minor characters to me are the ultimate use of man v man and man v society.
Alrighty then, I've gone over how I write characters I hope you put my wisdom to use and lletlet me know how it goes. Till tomorrow!
